New Taipei City Councilor Urges Increase in Senior Allowance to Match Keelung's Benefits

New Taipei City Councilor Chen Wei-chieh is urging the city's social welfare department to enhance the "Chongyang" (Double Ninth Festival) senior citizen allowance. He proposes that the city's benefits should align with Keelung City's "Chang Le Liu Wu Project," which offers increased allowances and broader eligibility. Chen pointed out that while New Taipei offers 1,500 New Taiwan dollars to seniors aged 65-79, other major cities provide more, such as Taoyuan's flat 2,500 NTD for those over 65 and Taichung's 2,000 NTD for ages 65-89.

Chen emphasized that the senior allowance is a tangible expression of the government's care and welfare for the elderly. As Taiwan's most populous municipality, New Taipei should strive to elevate its welfare standards. He specifically mentioned that Keelung's "Chang Le Liu Wu Project" has significantly expanded its reach, benefiting 87,000 residents compared to the previous 28,000, alongside a substantial increase in the allowance amount. Chen believes that areas in New Taipei with a higher concentration of elderly residents, such as Bali, Sanzhi, and Shimen, would particularly benefit from increased support, which could help alleviate financial pressures.

Social Affairs Bureau Director Li Mei-chen acknowledged the call for review, stating that the department is considering relaxing eligibility requirements. However, she noted that any adjustments must be carefully weighed against New Taipei's overall financial situation. Chen has requested a formal "Feasibility Assessment Report on the Adjustment of New Taipei City's Chongyang Senior Citizen Allowance" within one month. With the Chongyang Festival on October 29, he hopes the city government will expedite planning and announce any proposed changes and timelines before the festival.
