New Trains Await Tapa-Tartu Railway Completion to Shorten Travel Time

New electric trains intended for Estonia's railway network are currently on hold, awaiting the completion of crucial infrastructure upgrades. Elron, the Estonian national passenger train operator, has ordered new Škoda electric trains that are now delayed.

These modern trains were originally slated to begin service on the busy Tallinn-Tartu route by the close of 2024. However, their deployment has been postponed primarily because of ongoing reconstruction and electrification efforts along the Tapa-Tartu railway segment. This vital section of the network requires significant work before it can accommodate the new electric rolling stock and facilitate faster journey times.

The delay underscores the dependency of new transport services on the timely completion of infrastructure projects. Passengers on the Tallinn-Tartu line can expect continued use of existing services until the upgraded railway and new trains are fully operational, which is now anticipated beyond the initial 2024 deadline.
