New US aircraft carrier group arrives in West Asia amid Iran tensions

A new U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike group has arrived in West Asia, the U.S. military announced Thursday. The deployment follows recent criticism of President Donald Trump's approach to Iran, fueled by reports of deteriorating conditions aboard the previously stationed aircraft carrier.

The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group is now operating in West Asia as part of a scheduled assignment, CENTCOM, the U.S. military command overseeing the region, stated in a post on X. This development occurred just days after media outlets reported on the poor state of the USS Abraham Lincoln, which had been deployed since November 2025. These reports, citing relatives of crew members, detailed issues such as a lack of food and broken plumbing systems.

While Trump dismissed these concerns, he confirmed that another aircraft carrier would replace the Lincoln. The USS George Washington, previously based in Japan, had been operating in the Pacific Ocean. Its transfer to West Asia signifies the absence of a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Pacific region, a move that could benefit China as it expands its influence. The Lincoln had departed California in November 2025 for duties in the South China Sea before being redirected to West Asia in anticipation of the U.S.-led strikes against Iran, which began in late February.
