New York City cracks down on illegal e-bike and scooter sales

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration has launched a new offensive to remove non-compliant electric vehicles from city streets, targeting online businesses that sell illegal electric bicycles, scooters, and other motorized devices.

The city has issued cease and desist orders to 42 e-commerce businesses, demanding they stop selling prohibited motorized devices to customers within New York City's 175 zip codes. According to an official statement from the mayor's office, these products exceed legal limits for speed, weight, or technical specifications, making them unfit for sale or use on city streets.

Authorities noted that the rise in online sales has fueled the expansion of these vehicles in recent years. Consequently, a significant portion of fatal accidents involving electric bike and scooter users has involved models that should never have been legally circulating. Mayor Mamdani stated that the initiative aims to hold companies accountable for offering these products, rather than placing the burden on consumers who may mistakenly believe the devices are legal due to their availability on well-known platforms.

The new policy does not alter existing traffic rules but reinforces compliance through legal action against sellers of prohibited items. The city reminded the public that the sale and use of certain electric bicycles, scooters, and mopeds are currently forbidden. The Department of Transportation Commissioner, Mike Flynn, clarified that legally regulated electric bicycles remain an efficient and safe option for urban travel.
