New York is taking a firm stance on vehicle safety, with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announcing that cars with "Do Not Drive" alerts due to unrepaired critical safety issues will fail their inspections. This measure specifically targets vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbags.

The state's proactive campaign has already seen over 10,000 vehicle owners successfully replace their faulty airbags at no cost. However, a significant number of drivers have yet to complete this crucial procedure, creating a persistent safety hazard on the roads. The DMV's announcement underscores the urgency of addressing these risks.

To facilitate the necessary repairs, New York is providing free towing and replacement services for affected vehicles. Many manufacturers also offer at-home services, making the process more convenient for drivers. "Road safety is our top priority, and that's why New York has a rigorous safety inspection for every vehicle registered in the state," stated Christian Jackstadt, Acting Commissioner of the New York State DMV. "We have leveraged this program to ensure that the most critical repairs are made. Vehicle equipment safety is fundamental in New York."

The Takata airbag recall is the largest in U.S. history, impacting an estimated 67 million airbags. Authorities warn that these devices can rupture, ejecting sharp metal fragments at speeds up to 200 mph. As the airbags degrade over time, an increasing number of vehicles each year receive the "Do Not Drive" warning, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance and action.
