New York man survives lightning strike outside his Staten Island home

Thomas Fahmy was carrying an umbrella to a dentist appointment when lightning struck him just steps from his home on Staten Island.

A camera mounted at the door captured the incident. Fahmy fell to the ground in the next fraction of a second, but soon managed to stand and walk back inside. His family had witnessed what happened and called 911 for help.

Fahmy said the lightning struck his leg. He spent the night in hospital and underwent several medical examinations, but doctors found no burns.

“ When the lightning struck me, the initial sensations I felt throughout my body were completely unexpected: tingling, numbness, and pain. I simply felt a burning sensation. I did not have burns. I underwent several medical examinations and did not have a single burn. On Sunday, I went to church to say, ‘Thank you, Lord!’”
