New York overdose deaths fall 45% since 2022

New York recorded 3,775 overdose deaths in 2025, down 45% from 6,630 in 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul said on International Overdose Awareness Day. The figures, drawn from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, represent a decline from about 18 deaths a day to about 10.

The progress achieved in recent years shows that our historic investments in combating addiction are making a difference.

Hochul attributed the progress to the state’s investments in combating addiction. She said 16 landmarks, including the World Trade Center, Niagara Falls and the Mario Cuomo Bridge, would be lit purple to honor people who died in the overdose epidemic.

The state has directed about $500 million from opioid settlement funds toward prevention, treatment, harm reduction and recovery. The Health Department lists more than 1,400 opioid overdose prevention programs operating through over 6,000 access points, where people can receive prevention training and free naloxone.

This day of awareness also serves as a reminder of the need to continue supporting those still struggling with substance use disorder.

Treatment access has also expanded. Since 2021, 27 counties have increased access to methadone, while 14 others have started such programs for residents. Five mobile medication units bring services directly to communities with high needs. Addiction treatment is available in all 58 local jails and 41 state correctional facilities, reaching more than 16,000 incarcerated people.

Despite the decline, Chinazo Cunningham, commissioner of the state Office of Addiction Services and Supports, said New York was still losing too many residents. “This is not just about numbers, but about people, and their loss affects us all,” she said.
