New York prepares for heatwave with cooling centers and hydrant fountains

New York City is bracing for a significant heatwave, with officials warning of "life-threatening heat" as temperatures are expected to soar. Some libraries and public facilities have been designated as cooling centers to offer respite. Special cooling stations will be set up for outdoor workers, and misting fans will be deployed in certain public areas. The city is also providing free spray caps for hydrants, allowing children to cool off with water fountains.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani cautioned that the city could experience one of the hottest days in over a decade. Last year, 19 people died in New York City due to a "record heat" in June. Between 2016 and 2025, an average of seven heat-related deaths occurred annually. From 2014 to 2023, an estimated 490 indirect heat-related deaths occurred each year, where extreme heat exacerbated pre-existing conditions, accounting for about 3% of all deaths during the warmer months.

The heatwave is not confined to New York. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for dangerous heat, with record temperatures and high humidity expected across large parts of the central and eastern United States. Canada is also experiencing extreme heat, with warnings issued for parts of Ontario and Quebec. Experts attribute these high temperatures to a "heat dome" phenomenon, similar to what recently affected parts of Europe.

Temperatures are forecast to slightly decrease by Sunday, but will remain high. The upcoming World Cup match between Brazil and Norway in East Rutherford is expected to take place in 34-degree Celsius (93.2 Fahrenheit) heat. The Subashiri Trail on Mount Fuji also opened earlier than in past years.
