New York seeks State Police recruits; salary exceeds $109,000

The New York State Police is seeking new recruits for its academy, which is scheduled to begin in August 2027. The application deadline is August 17, and aspiring troopers must meet a range of criteria, including age, citizenship, and educational qualifications.

Upon completion of the academy and one year of service, troopers can expect a total compensation package ranging from US$109,620 to US$121,347, depending on their assigned region. The recruitment drive aims to build a force that reflects the diversity of New York's communities, emphasizing equal opportunity employment.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens between 20 and 43 years old, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be at least 21 years old at the time of appointment. They must also reside in New York and hold a valid state driver's license. While 30 college credits are generally required, alternatives such as military or police training are accepted. No prior police experience is needed.

The application process involves an initial written exam, followed by a physical fitness test, a background investigation, and a review of tattoos and body art. The written exam, a two-hour multiple-choice test with 150 questions, assesses cognitive abilities, behavioral characteristics, and attitudes. Study guides are available to assist applicants. Eligible candidates are ranked based on their scores and any applicable veteran credits, with selections made as vacancies arise.
