New York SNAP EBT Card Fraud Targeted by Secret Service Operation

Federal authorities have initiated a special operation in New York to combat fraud targeting EBT cards, which are used by millions of beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The initiative aims to detect skimming devices illegally placed on payment terminals, a method used to copy financial information and steal funds intended for food purchases.

The skimming scam involves attaching unauthorized readers to payment terminals. These devices capture data from cards when users make purchases. With this stolen information, criminals can clone cards or access the benefits deposited into users' accounts, often leaving victims with depleted balances when they try to use their funds.

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed the operation, working alongside other law enforcement agencies to inspect various businesses in the city over three days. Agents also trained merchants on how to recognize signs of tampering, as some devices can be installed quickly and discreetly.

Investigators believe New York is among the most affected areas by this type of crime. In a previous operation, 65 skimming devices were found in just three days, and another operation uncovered 55 devices. Over the past year, federal forces have located 133 devices linked to this fraud scheme, reportedly preventing nearly $139 million in financial losses and stolen benefits. McCool emphasized, "The message is clear: we will continue to investigate these crimes and hold accountable those who participate in them."
