New Zealand, Papua New Guinea sign defense pact to counter China's Pacific expansion

Amidst escalating strategic competition and China's growing influence in the Pacific, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea have signed a defense cooperation agreement. The pact, effective from 2026 to 2029, aims to enhance defense dialogue, training, military exercises, and personnel exchanges between the two nations.

New Zealand Defense Minister Chris Penk stated that in an increasingly volatile world, Pacific nations must cooperate closely to strengthen their collective security. This agreement is a component of a wider initiative by Australia, New Zealand, and the United States to solidify security bonds across the Pacific.

This move follows similar security pacts signed by Australia with Fiji and Vanuatu, and the U.S. agreement with Papua New Guinea in 2023, which grants U.S. forces greater access for training and infrastructure work. These coordinated efforts reflect concerns among pro-Western Pacific governments about China's expanding diplomatic, policing, and infrastructure footprint in the region, despite Beijing's failure to secure a broad regional agreement in 2022.
