New Zealand Says China Conducting 'Large-Scale' Spy Operations; Beijing Denies 'Fabrications'

New Zealand's security intelligence agency has pinpointed China as the sole nation engaged in large-scale espionage activities within the country. The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) stated in its "Threat Environment 2026" report that while multiple countries conduct spying operations, China is uniquely detected operating "at scale."

It alleges that Chinese intelligence agencies are actively attempting to recruit current and former government officials who have had access to classified or sensitive information. China has vehemently denied these accusations. The Ministry of State Security issued a statement calling New Zealand's claims "baseless fabrications" and rejecting the report's findings.
