Newcastle and Liverpool to honor Kevin Keegan on Sunday

Newcastle United and Liverpool are set to pay tribute to the legendary Kevin Keegan before their match this Sunday at St. James' Park. Keegan, who passed away on July 20 at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer, left a significant mark on both clubs throughout his career.

As part of the tribute, players from both Newcastle and Liverpool will wear warm-up jerseys bearing Keegan's name and his iconic number seven. Fans have been leaving shirts at the stadium's memorial, and these will be transformed into a mosaic to be displayed on the pitch. A minute of applause will also be held before the game begins to honor his memory.

Keegan enjoyed two distinct periods with Liverpool as a player, from 1971 to 1977. During his time at Anfield, he played over 300 matches, scored 100 goals, and was instrumental in the team winning the league title three times and the European Cup once. His individual accolades include two Ballon d'Or awards.

Later, Keegan had a brief stint as a player with Newcastle before returning to manage the club from 1992 to 1997. In his managerial role, he guided Newcastle from the brink of relegation to the third division, achieving promotion to the Premier League and securing the club's first European appearance since 1977. The club has also invited Keegan's family and other club legends, such as Faustino Asprilla, Alan Shearer, David Ginola, and Les Ferdinand, to attend the match.
