Newgen Healthcare to innovate bio-market with domestic natural ingredients

Newgen Healthcare, a bio-healthcare startup, is poised to innovate the domestic market by developing functional ingredients from natural Korean resources. The company's CEO, Kim Tae-woo, explained that the founding team, comprised of experienced researchers from university research centers, decided to commercialize their findings. "Our researchers at Newgen Healthcare all come from university research centers. Having researched health functional foods for a long time, we decided to turn this into a business," Kim said.

The startup's primary focus is on discovering and commercializing individual-recognized raw materials from native Korean plants. Their initial efforts centered on a new material not yet recognized for its efficacy in Korea, despite its traditional use in herbal medicine. This process involved collaboration for toxicity assessments and human application tests to gain individual recognition. Building on this experience, Newgen Healthcare is now systematically validating the efficacy of rosehip flower bud extract.

Inspired by the rosehip, which grows on coastal dunes and is known as the "rose of the sea," Newgen Healthcare developed its brand, Beach Rosan. The brand offers a range of products for liver health, body fat reduction, meal replacements, and immune support. The company's commitment extends beyond product development to ESG management. Rosehip plants play a vital role in preventing coastal erosion and filtering sea winds. However, their natural habitats in Korea are severely damaged due to indiscriminate harvesting, with traditional methods of using the roots accelerating coastal ecosystem destruction.

Newgen Healthcare proposes an eco-friendly, sustainable growth model by harvesting only the flower buds, which regrow annually, without damaging the plant. "Our goal is to systematically restore rosehip colonies along the Korean coast. We plan to establish large-scale rosehip habitats in coastal dune protection areas in cooperation with local governments. If rosehip habitats are established, they will serve as excellent local tourism resources in addition to their environmental benefits," Kim stated. He envisions a win-win model that provides stable additional income for fishing villages, particularly during off-seasons, by establishing a system for the safe management and harvesting of rosehip flower buds.
