Newsom Confirms 13 Automakers to Offer Up to $3,500 Discount on New Electric Cars

California is launching a new initiative to make electric vehicles more accessible to residents. Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 168, establishing the MyFirstEV program, which offers financial assistance of up to $3,500 for first-time electric car buyers.

The program aims to reduce the upfront cost of EVs, particularly for families, and follows the elimination of similar federal incentives. It is funded through a combination of public and private contributions. The state is allocating $135 million, which participating automakers will match dollar-for-dollar, creating a total fund of $270 million to promote cleaner transportation.

Industry representatives have welcomed the initiative. Mike Murphy, executive director of the American EV Jobs Alliance, stated, "The $135 million for first-time EV buyers, matched dollar-for-dollar by automakers, totals over $270 million in valuable assistance for new EV buyers." The rebates will be applied directly at the dealership, eliminating the need for buyers to wait for reimbursements or complete additional paperwork.

MyFirstEV is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2026, with specific dates and operational details to be announced soon. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will oversee the program, coordinating policies for emission reduction and the transition to sustainable transport technologies. This initiative is part of a broader $600 million package aimed at promoting electric vehicle adoption in the state.
