Newsom says Trump launched politically motivated probe against him and wife

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that he and his wife have been placed on President Donald Trump's "hit list." In a video posted to X, Newsom accused Trump of launching a politically motivated investigation against him.

Newsom claimed that federal agents have recently visited his family members, friends, and former employees, demanding documents and digging up old records. "Today, my wife and I made Donald Trump's list," Newsom wrote, using the term "hit list." He asserted that Trump is targeting him not just for his critical tweets, but because he is considering a presidential run.

"They have not found any evidence of a crime," Newsom stated, directly addressing Trump and urging him to leave his wife and other family members in peace. The U.S. Department of Justice and the White House have not yet responded to requests for comment from AFP.

Newsom and Trump have a history of criticizing each other, with past disputes over climate change and Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to California. Last year, Trump expressed support for Newsom's arrest after allegations that Newsom hindered immigrant monitoring in the state. The Department of Justice has taken action against several of Trump's political opponents during his second term, including former FBI Director James Comey and former National Security Advisor John Bolton.
