Next-gen HSR train arrives in Taiwan

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC) welcomed its first N700ST high-speed train from Japan, a significant addition to its fleet as part of an order for 12 new trains. The arrival at the Port of Kaohsiung was marked by a celebratory event co-hosted by THSRC chairman Shih Che and senior government officials.

In conjunction with the new train's introduction, THSRC is contemplating its first fare increase in two decades, potentially effective July 1 next year. This adjustment is intended to finance the "Taiwan High-Speed Rail 2.0" plan, which includes crucial upgrades to safety, ride comfort, and overall service quality. Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Shih-kai indicated that any price adjustments would be contingent on the public's reception of the new bullet trains, while expressing hope for THSRC's continued excellent service.

The N700ST train's journey faced a slight delay due to typhoons, but its arrival marks the beginning of a phased integration into service. The remaining 11 trains are scheduled for delivery between this year and 2028, with the entire new fleet expected to be operational by September 2028. The city of Kaohsiung has illuminated scenic locations in THSRC's color scheme to honor the train's arrival.
