Next total solar eclipse on a public holiday

For those who missed the recent total solar eclipse due to cloud cover, the prospect of witnessing this celestial phenomenon remains. While Icelanders must wait until the year 2196 for another total solar eclipse on their homeland, they can look forward to an upcoming event in 2027.

The next total solar eclipse will grace the skies on August 2, 2027, passing over North Africa and southern Spain. This event is particularly significant as it marks the second total eclipse to cross Spain within a year. The eclipse's path will extend across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. It is considered a major astronomical event of the decade, with the longest duration of totality visible from land not expected again until 2114.

Europeans can observe the eclipse from southern Spain, where totality will last for approximately four minutes and 39 seconds in Tarifa. Further east, in Luxor, Egypt, observers may experience up to 6 minutes and 22 seconds of darkness, coinciding with visits to ancient sites like the Karnak and Luxor temples and the Valley of the Kings.

Looking ahead, other notable eclipses are predicted. On July 22, 2028, Australia and New Zealand will experience an eclipse traveling over Christmas Island, Sydney, and the Blue Mountains, with clear skies expected in New Zealand's South Island. November 25, 2030, will see an eclipse over the deserts of Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and Lesotho before crossing the Indian Ocean to Australia. A rare hybrid solar eclipse, beginning as an annular eclipse and becoming total over a narrow path in the Pacific, is scheduled for November 14, 2031, requiring special eclipse cruises from Hawaii for viewing.
