NFL, NFLPA toughen discipline for repeated player-safety violations

The NFL and its players' union have introduced a stricter disciplinary system to enhance player safety, announcing that players will face a one-game suspension after committing three specified safety violations within a single season. This updated on-field accountability system aims to curb dangerous techniques and reduce the risk of injury.

The policy places a greater emphasis on specific actions deemed high-risk, including hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hitting defenseless players, and blindside blocks. Committing three offenses in any of these categories will trigger an automatic one-game suspension, with violations carrying over into subsequent seasons. The league and union stated that player safety is a "shared responsibility" and that these changes target techniques creating the "greatest risk."

To ensure fairness and transparency, players will begin the 2026 season with a clean slate, and a more streamlined process will be implemented for reducing the impact of prior offenses. While players committing multiple serious violations will be suspended, those who commit a single violation in other eligible categories will have their fines returned at the end of the season. Coaches will also be required to participate in meetings with the league when their players are nearing suspension, and clubs with excessive health-and-safety violations may face increased financial penalties.
