NGO alerted that Franklin Durán's life is in danger under state custody

The Venezuelan NGO Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón (JEP) has issued a grave alert, stating that the life of businessman Franklin Durán is in "imminent danger" while under state custody. The organization is accompanying Durán's family in their demand for immediate medical attention and his release, citing his severely deteriorating health.

The life of the prisoner Franklin Durán “runs an imminent risk under the custody of the State,” alerted the NGO Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón (JEP), which announced its accompaniment to the family of the businessman in demanding immediate medical attention and his release.

According to JEP, formal requests for humanitarian measures have been made since last year due to Durán's delicate health condition. He suffers from stomach cancer and was not included in the Amnesty Law applied this year. The NGO denounced that authorities have completely disregarded the severity of Durán's medical status, which has led to an alarming physical decline. His own children reportedly did not recognize him during a recent in-person visit due to his emaciated state.

JEP further reported that Durán lacks regular access to essential medications and supplies for his treatment. Additionally, he is not receiving basic necessities such as water and food required for his survival. The organization emphasized that Durán is a "critical cancer patient" and that repeated requests to authorities for a response have gone unanswered.

The organization qualified the situation as “extremely serious,” noting that during the first in-person visit, his own children could not recognize him due to the alarming physical deterioration he is experiencing.

The NGO firmly stated its support for the family's claims, asserting that the state bears direct and sole responsibility for Durán's life and physical integrity. Durán was arrested on May 24, 2020, accused of financing the failed "Operation Gideon." He faces charges including financing terrorism, treason, rebellion, conspiracy with a foreign government, terrorism, and illicit trafficking of war weapons. The United States had also investigated him for allegedly providing a plane for the transfer of Jordan Goudreau, the former Green Beret who led the operation.

The organization affirmed that it joins the family's claim, pointing out that Durán is “a cancer patient in critical condition” and that the authorities continue to provide no response to the repeated requests submitted.
