Nicaraguan opposition urges international pressure on Ortega over election comments

Nicaragua's opposition movement, Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos), has called on the international community to intervene and prevent President Daniel Ortega's government from acting with impunity. The group specifically asked for "maximum political and diplomatic pressure" to open a path to democracy in the country.

Ortega recently stated that he will not permit electoral processes that could jeopardize the ruling party's control, a remark Unamos interprets as a clear indication of his regime's tyrannical nature and fear of free elections. The opposition group, composed of exiled Nicaraguans stripped of their nationality, highlighted that since Ortega's return to power in 2007, the Sandinista government has "stolen" the right to free elections.

Unamos recalled the 2021 elections, where opposition presidential candidates, political leaders, journalists, and activists were imprisoned, and remaining political parties were eliminated. They argue that Ortega's recent statements and new laws, which effectively cancel future elections and close electoral avenues, confirm the absence of a rule of law and the complete violation of freedoms in Nicaragua. The movement sees this as a sign that the resistance of the Nicaraguan people is yielding results, suggesting the "end of the Ortega-Murillo tyranny is near."
