Nico Schlotterbeck out for rest of World Cup with ankle injury

German central defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a torn ligament in his left ankle. The injury occurred during Germany's 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast, forcing him to be substituted at halftime.

Schlotterbeck sustained the injury in the 13th minute following a collision with Ivory Coast's Amad Diallo. Although he received medical attention on the field multiple times, he managed to play until the break. Antonio Rüdiger replaced him for the second half of the match.

The absence of Schlotterbeck, who is the only left-footed center-back in the squad and known for his ability to organize the team's build-up play from the back, is considered a significant blow. Coach Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged the loss, stating, "Schlotti will be missed on the field as a standout defender and excellent organizer."

Despite the setback, Schlotterbeck will continue to travel with the rest of the German delegation in the United States. Nagelsmann expressed optimism about Schlotterbeck's positive outlook, noting, "Fortunately, he is a positive person who looks to the future. It is a good sign that he will stay with the team because he also has influence off the field."

Schlotterbeck had previously scored a headed goal from a corner kick in Germany's dominant 7-1 win over Curaçao. The German team also includes other central defenders such as Waldemar Anton and Malick Thiaw, with Leon Goretzka also capable of playing in that position.
