Nicușor Dan calls CSAT meeting to discuss strengthening US military presence in Romania

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has called a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence, or CSAT, for Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the Cotroceni Palace.

The council will examine the Army of Romania’s procurement plan for 2027-2036. The document is to be considered in light of the country’s needs to modernize and develop its military capabilities. Members will also discuss the “Romania’s Army 2044” program, which sets out long-term directions for the armed forces.

Another major item concerns the US military presence in Europe. The council will review terms of reference for the US Department of War’s assessment of the posture of US forces and their deployment locations in Europe. It will also discuss strengthening the US military presence on Romanian territory, an issue linked in the agenda to the security of NATO’s eastern flank.

The meeting will further address implementation of the SAFE program. Members are due to examine an assessment document approved at an inter-institutional working meeting on Aug. 13, 2026. The Presidential Administration said the council would also consider other current national security issues.
