Nigel Farage faces new probe over undeclared support allegations

Nigel Farage, the prominent leader of the UK's Reform UK party, is facing renewed scrutiny over potential misconduct, with calls for a second parliamentary standards investigation. The allegations center on undeclared support Farage allegedly received prior to his entry into Parliament in 2024.

A Liberal Democrat lawmaker has formally requested the parliamentary watchdog to examine new claims. These reports suggest that George Cottrell, a long-time associate of Farage, provided security services, social media assistance, and accommodation during the year leading up to Farage's election. Under parliamentary rules, MPs are required to declare financial interests and significant benefits received in the 12 months before entering Parliament, though certain personal gifts are exempt.

Farage's spokesperson has strongly refuted the allegations, labeling them as "baseless and contrived" and asserting that no parliamentary rules were violated. However, the claims have prompted Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde to write to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Daniel Greenberg, urging an investigation. Babarinde stated that the reported support raises "a serious question" about Farage's compliance with disclosure regulations.

This latest controversy comes as Reform UK's standing in national opinion polls rises, placing the party and its leadership under increased public and media attention. Farage is already subject to a separate investigation concerning a £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency investor, which he maintains was an unconditional personal gift not requiring declaration. If found to have seriously breached disclosure rules in either investigation, Farage could face suspension from the House of Commons, potentially triggering a recall petition in his constituency.
