Niger police arrest 21 over thuggery, weapons and robbery

Niger State police say they have arrested 21 people in cases involving alleged thuggery, possession of dangerous weapons and robbery, including a suspected armed robber.

Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said officers arrested 12 suspects during a midnight raid on August 24 in areas of Chanchaga, including Angwan-Dakoko, Angwan-Kwakwa and Angwan-Gwari. Among those detained were Victor Solomon, 25, who police said carried a dagger, and 17-year-old Osama Saidu Baushe, who allegedly had a sword.

On 1st September, 2026, at about 12.30am, Police operatives attached to Chanchaga Division stormed some identified blackspots around Angwan-Dakoko, Angwan-Kwakwa, Angwan-Gwari at midnight and 12 miscreants were arrested.

In a separate operation on August 25, officers arrested six suspects in Kpakungu and three others in the Marikichi area. Police said the suspects had suspected cannabis, a cutlass, scissors, a black bag and other illicit items.

Police also arrested Yusuf Musa, 20, of Angwan-Kadara in Maitumbi, whom they described as a suspected armed robber and housebreaker. Abiodun said Musa confessed that he and Danjuma, 22, broke into a house on September 4 and stole a smart television, an orthopedic bed, clothing, caps, bed sheets, a generator, shoes, cameras and other goods. Police said they were searching for Danjuma and recovering the stolen property. All the suspects remained in custody for investigation and prosecution, according to the spokesman.

During interrogation, he confessed that on 4th September, 2026, at about 01.20am, he conspired with one Danjuma 22 years of age, and of Dana area of Maitumbi, and broke into a house behind Dana where they carted away the following items: One smart TV, One orthopedic bed and 17pcs of new shirts.
