Nigeria, Canada sign expanded air transport deal for direct flights

Nigeria and Canada have formalized a historic Air Transport Agreement, paving the way for direct scheduled flights between the two countries and significantly enhancing bilateral ties. This landmark deal is expected to deepen trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people connections.

The agreement was signed in Abuja by officials from both nations, with Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, represented by the Director of Air Transport Management, Mohammed Tijjani. This move aligns with the Nigerian government's ongoing efforts to expand international aviation partnerships and improve air connectivity.

In a landmark step towards strengthening bilateral aviation relations and expanding economic cooperation, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Canada have signed an expanded Air Transport Agreement that will, for the first time, permit direct scheduled air services between both countries.

Direct flights have been a long-standing aspiration for travelers and businesses, driven by a substantial Nigerian diaspora in Canada and growing trade and educational exchanges. The expanded agreement follows an extensive technical review of the existing Bilateral Air Services framework.

Key provisions of the agreement include the right for both Nigeria and Canada to designate multiple airlines to operate scheduled services. Each country's designated airlines will be allowed 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 weekly all-cargo flights, fostering greater opportunities for carriers and businesses in both nations.
