Nigeria congratulates Colombia’s president-elect, Espriella

Nigeria has extended congratulations to Abelardo Espriella following his success in the Colombian presidential runoff election on June 21, 2026. The Federal Government conveyed its best wishes for Espriella's upcoming term, which is set to begin with his inauguration on August 7.

A statement issued by Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted Nigeria's acknowledgment of the Colombian people's democratic choice. Ebienfa expressed Nigeria's eagerness to foster a close working relationship with Espriella's administration.

The Government of Nigeria reaffirms its readiness to further strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two countries in areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment,security and South-South cooperation.

Nigeria and Colombia, according to the statement, are united by a shared dedication to democratic principles, the pursuit of peace, and the advancement of sustainable development. The Nigerian government affirmed its readiness to enhance the existing friendship and cooperation between the two nations across various sectors, including trade, investment, security, and South-South cooperation.

Espriella secured victory in the presidential runoff by obtaining 49.66 percent of the votes cast, narrowly defeating his opponent, Iván Cepeda, who garnered 48.70 percent. Nigeria reiterated its commitment to deepening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of both countries.
