Nigeria congratulates Colombia's president-elect

Nigeria has extended its congratulations to Abelardo Espriella following his victory in Colombia's presidential runoff election held on June 21, 2026. The congratulatory message was formally conveyed in a statement released by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Abuja on Thursday.

Nigeria welcomed the democratic expression of the Colombian people's will and signaled its anticipation of close collaboration with Espriella's incoming administration, which is slated for inauguration on August 7. The statement highlighted shared values between the two nations, noting a common commitment to democracy, peace, and sustainable development.

Espriella secured 49.66 percent of the votes in the presidential runoff, narrowly defeating his opponent, Iván Cepeda, who garnered 48.70 percent. Nigeria emphasized its dedication to deepening bilateral relations with Colombia for the mutual benefit of both nations.
