Nigeria Declares Public Holiday for Democracy Day Celebration

Nigeria's federal government has designated Friday, June 12, as a public holiday to commemorate 27 years of continuous democratic governance. The announcement, made in Abuja, highlights the nation's commitment to its democratic journey.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, speaking for the government, reaffirmed the administration's dedication to upholding democratic principles, the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. He emphasized that a secure and stable environment is fundamental for both democracy and national development.

As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens.

Tunji-Ojo encouraged Nigerians to use the holiday for civic reflection, urging them to remain law-abiding and support democratic institutions.
