Nigeria Establishes Safe Schools Department to Enhance Security

Nigeria's federal government has launched a significant restructuring of its school safety efforts by establishing a full-fledged Safe Schools Department within the Ministry of Education. This move aims to provide unified strategic leadership, coordination, and oversight for school safety programs across the nation's 774 local government areas.

School safety cannot be handled in a fragmented manner. The Safe Schools Initiative has many interconnected components that require a coordinated national approach.

The new department takes over from the former Safe Schools Financing Unit, which was previously housed in the Federal Ministry of Finance. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa explained that this restructuring aligns with the Ministry's constitutional mandate for education policy, implementation, and monitoring. He stressed that school safety requires a coordinated national approach, not a fragmented one, to ensure all schools benefit from the program.

The Federal Ministry of Education will provide policy direction, coordinate implementation with states, and ensure that every school benefits from the programme.

Under a unified national framework, the Ministry of Education will now coordinate the Safe Schools Initiative. This framework is designed to enhance implementation, improve accountability, and strengthen monitoring. The initiative involves close collaboration with various security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The renewed initiative extends beyond basic physical security. It encompasses measures such as perimeter fencing, solar-powered lighting, water and sanitation facilities, surveillance technology, trained security personnel, and early warning systems. Minister Alausa also addressed accountability regarding funds, noting that while current reviews cover funds disbursed before his appointment, the government is committed to cooperating fully with the Senate's oversight responsibilities.
