Nigeria finishes seventh at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria concluded its participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by securing seventh place on the final medals table. The contingent amassed a total of 24 medals, comprising 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.

This performance marked Nigeria as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games, outperforming traditional rivals South Africa and Kenya. Australia led the overall medal table with 171 medals, followed by England and Canada. Nigeria's achievement in Glasgow is considered one of the country's most successful Commonwealth Games outings in recent years.

The medals were earned across athletics, weightlifting, para-athletics, para-powerlifting, and judo. Several athletes made significant historical contributions. Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth gold in the men's 400 meters, clocking 44.25 seconds. Ezekiel Nathaniel also made history as the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth title in the 400m hurdles.

In field events, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed Nigeria's first Commonwealth championship in the men's shot put. Ruth Usoro won silver in the women's long jump, achieving one of the best performances of her career. On the track, Udodi Onwuzurike secured silver in the men's 200 meters, and Ella Onojuvwevwo earned bronze in the women's 400 meters, ending a 32-year medal drought for Nigeria in the event. World record holder Tobi Amusan added a bronze medal in the women's 100m hurdles to her collection.

Nigeria's relay teams also performed well, with the mixed 4x400m quartet winning bronze in the event's Commonwealth Games debut. The men's 4x100m team also claimed bronze after an appeal by Canada. Weightlifters and para-athletes contributed significantly to the medal haul, continuing Nigeria's strong tradition in these sports at the Commonwealth Games. The Games themselves were a success, attracting over 630,000 attendees and generating nearly half a billion views on social media.
