Nigeria flags off long-delayed Gombe-Maiduguri highway reconstruction

Residents, motorists, and traders in Nigeria's North-east have long endured dangerous journeys on the Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri highway, a strategic road that has seen numerous contract awards and re-awards over the years without significant progress. The federal government has now officially flagged off its reconstruction, vowing to change the narrative of neglect.

This long-awaited project is described as a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu's infrastructure renewal program. The highway, crucial for connecting Gombe, southern Borno, and Maiduguri, has suffered decades of deterioration. A notable attempt at rehabilitation in 2017 under former President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly stalled, leaving the road in deplorable condition and fueling widespread frustration.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, acknowledged the project's significance during the flag-off ceremony, assuring residents of the current administration's commitment to delivering lasting quality infrastructure. He detailed that the 125-kilometer dual carriageway is part of a larger 420-kilometer corridor and was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council as a legacy road project. "This project is not just about constructing a road; it is about connecting communities, creating economic opportunities and opening up the region for greater development," Umahi stated.

The government is employing reinforced concrete pavement technology for enhanced durability and reduced long-term maintenance. Umahi expressed confidence in the contractor's technical capabilities and defended the administration's broader infrastructure drive, emphasizing that "The road network is the backbone of economic growth. Our objective is to build infrastructure that will support commerce, improve mobility and enhance the lives of Nigerians."

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya hailed the commencement of work as a major breakthrough for the region, underscoring the project's importance for local development and connectivity.
