Nigeria Launches Airport Waste Recycling, Inspects Upgraded Pilgrims' Terminal

Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has initiated a two-pronged effort to modernize facilities and promote environmental sustainability at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. He inaugurated the first phase of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) Sustainable Waste Management Programme and inspected an upgraded Pilgrims’ Terminal.

The waste management initiative introduces color-coded recycling bins, a move Keyamo described as the first step in a nationwide program to enhance cleanliness and environmental responsibility at Nigerian airports. This program underscores FAAN's commitment to improving ecological practices across the country's aviation infrastructure.

Following the environmental initiative, Keyamo toured the revamped Pilgrims’ Terminal. The upgraded facility now boasts a 300-seat passenger waiting area, modern VIP and VVIP lounges, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, a fully air-conditioned mosque, and enhanced security screening systems. Keyamo praised FAAN's management for both projects, urging them to maintain the momentum in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope Agenda."

FAAN emphasized that the waste management program is a significant stride toward creating cleaner, greener, and more sustainable airports. The authority appealed to passengers and airport users to actively participate by using the designated recycling bins. The upgrades to the Pilgrims’ Terminal, a key departure point for Muslim pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia, are expected to significantly improve passenger comfort and streamline operations during peak pilgrimage seasons.
