Nigeria marries 1,500 couples in mass wedding

In Kano state, northern Nigeria, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration has facilitated the marriages of approximately 1,500 couples in a large-scale mass wedding. The regional government organized the two-day event as a social intervention to support low-income families and foster social stability.

The whole idea for the marriage is to help our families and we husbands who are not financially stable to marry; that's why the government is helping us get married.

Each bride received a dowry of 200,000 naira (about $147) and support to establish a small business. The couples also received essential household items like beds, mattresses, and blankets. Before the ceremony, all participants underwent screening and counseling.

Governor Yusuf described the program as "a bold social intervention aimed at restoring hope and supporting dignified family life in Kano." He emphasized that the initiative was designed not only to assist women who might struggle to afford marriage but also to strengthen families and promote social stability within the state.

Among the participants were individuals who had suffered personal tragedies, including a man who lost his wife and six children in a violent attack. Officials hailed the ceremony as a step toward his "gradually returning to normal life" after the incident. Nigeria continues to grapple with a significant security crisis, particularly in its northern regions, which are frequently targeted by insurgents and criminal gangs.
