Nigeria Meters 60% of Electricity Consumers, FG Discloses

Nigeria's federal government has successfully metered roughly 60% of its active electricity consumers, marking significant progress in its efforts to reform the power sector. The ongoing rollout is a key component of Phase 1 of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), a $500 million initiative financed by the World Bank.

Ayodeji Gbeleyi, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), reported that out of 1,033,000 meters delivered, 668,000 have been deployed and installed on customers' premises. This initiative, alongside the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), aims to eliminate the long-standing issue of arbitrary estimated billing for registered customers across the country.

On various issues, we provided updates on meter deployment under Phase 1 of the World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme. We have implemented 60 percent of the meters that have been delivered in the country out of 1,033,000. So far, we have deployed and installed 668,000 meters on customers’ premises.

The update was provided during the second meeting of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) for 2026, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Gbeleyi also noted progress in the implementation of the Electricity Act, with approximately 17 states establishing their own State Electricity Regulatory Commissions since April 2024.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring Nigerians receive value from electricity and other critical economic sectors. He emphasized collaborative efforts to benefit citizens through improvements in electricity and telecommunications services.
