Nigeria Pitch Awards president backs football to bounce back

Shina Philips, president of the Nigeria Pitch Awards, believes Nigerian football is poised to overcome recent challenges and reclaim its status as a leading force in Africa.

Philips spoke in Abuja as organizers announced the 12th edition of the Nigeria Pitch Awards will take place on September 8 in Lagos. His remarks come after disappointing performances by the Super Eagles and Super Falcons in their World Cup qualification campaigns.

Despite these setbacks, Philips pointed to the success of Nigerian players in leagues worldwide as a strong reason for optimism. The awards, first held in 2013, aim to recognize and encourage the contributions of Nigerian players. Philips acknowledged a postponement from an earlier date due to unforeseen factors but assured that all logistics, including trophies, are ready. Nominees for top honors include Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, and Chiamaka Nnadozie, with 18 categories recognizing various achievements in Nigerian football.
