Nigeria Prioritizes Diaspora and Global Partnerships for Security and Prosperity

Nigeria's federal government has declared that strengthening ties with its diaspora and forging strategic international partnerships are crucial for enhancing national security, expanding economic opportunities, and fostering sustainable development. Speaking at the Nigerian Diaspora Economic Conference in Toronto, Canada, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, outlined the administration's approach. He acknowledged that security remains a significant challenge but assured that President Bola Tinubu's government is utilizing all available resources to manage the multifaceted threats that have persisted for over a decade. Nigeria is now entering what Enikanolaiye described as a 'new era of partnership of strategic autonomy' with key international allies, including the United States. He recently returned from Washington after high-level engagements aimed at securing tangible benefits for Nigerians in areas such as security, defense, and welfare, rather than pursuing purely symbolic diplomatic ties. The government is deepening international cooperation on security and economic development, prioritizing partnerships that align with Nigeria's national interests. A central theme of the minister's address was the renewed focus on the Nigerian diaspora as a vital resource. The Tinubu administration no longer views Nigerians living abroad solely through the lens of consular duties. Instead, they are considered 'critical assets of national development,' offering expertise, capital, networks, and international experience that can significantly contribute to Nigeria's development priorities. The government aims to harness this pool of skilled human resources to achieve national development goals.
