Nigeria rejoins World Energy Council, journalists back new leadership

Nigeria's return to the World Energy Council (WEC) has been welcomed by the Association of Energy Correspondents, Abuja (AECAF), which congratulated Abdulrazaq Isa and Bala Wunti on their appointments as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of WEC Nigeria. AECAF described the move as a significant development for the nation's energy sector.

The association highlighted that Nigeria's re-entry into the global energy body occurs at a critical juncture, marked by shifts in energy security, technological advancements, geopolitical dynamics, and the transition toward sustainable energy systems. AECAF expressed confidence that the newly appointed leadership team, possessing extensive experience across the energy industry, regulation, finance, and academia, will effectively guide WEC Nigeria.

AECAF specifically commended Isa for his contributions to indigenous refining and industrial development, anticipating his experience will bolster Nigeria's energy ambitions and foster greater local participation. Wunti's appointment as CEO was also lauded, with his three decades of experience in the energy sector seen as a vital asset for strategic direction and ensuring meaningful outcomes from the renewed international engagement.

Nigeria's participation in the WEC offers a platform to amplify its voice in international energy dialogues, ensuring its unique challenges and opportunities receive global attention. This includes contributing to discussions on energy security, affordability, sustainability, and a just energy transition, while simultaneously promoting national interests within the evolving global energy landscape.
