Nigeria Renames Major Highway After President Tinubu Amid Growing List of Honors

President Bola Tinubu's name is increasingly adorning public infrastructure across Nigeria, with the recent renaming of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway serving as the latest example. The Federal Government announced the decision on Thursday, with Works Minister Dave Umahi stating the 750-kilometer highway now bears the president's name in recognition of his vision and its conception during his tenure as Lagos State governor nearly three decades ago.

This move adds to a growing list of facilities named after Tinubu since he assumed office in May 2023. These include the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, renamed in March 2024 by Niger State Governor Umar Bago in appreciation of the president's support. The airport itself had been renamed less than a year prior.

Further honors include the renaming of Abuja's Southern Parkway to Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way in May 2024 by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The National Assembly also renamed its newly completed library after Tinubu in the same month. The Nigeria Immigration Service named its command and control center the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) in December 2024, citing its importance for border management and national security.
