Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany attacks Akwa Ibom council chair over poor roads

Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany, Ita Enang, has challenged the head of Itu Local Government Area over the condition of roads in the Akwa Ibom community, directing particular criticism at the road leading to the council chairperson’s village.

In a video circulating online, Enang questioned the performance of Chairperson Ubong Nkutt despite increased federal allocations. “Since he became the chairman, the first thing he could do is get land from the village, fence it and start building a house that he will live in. Where is the access road that he will use to his house? This is too shameful,” Enang said.

He claimed Itu received between 800 million and 900 million naira each month from the Federation Account, and said it received 1.3 billion naira in February. But an analysis of Federation Account Allocation Committee records by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation found lower figures.

Itu received a combined 1.143 billion naira from October to December 2024, 5.703 billion naira in 2025, and 2.608 billion naira during the first five months of 2026. Its cumulative allocation from October 2024 through May 2026 was 9.455 billion naira, an average of 472.8 million naira per month over 20 months. The highest monthly allocation since Nkutt took office was 566.16 million naira, allocated in April 2026 and shared in May. The 519.79 million naira distributed in February related to the January 2026 allocation, not 1.3 billion naira.

The figures show that Itu’s allocations increased after the petrol subsidy was removed and Federation Account distributions rose, but they do not support Enang’s stated amounts. The council’s financial position also cannot be judged solely from FAAC transfers. Itu is a commercial centre in Akwa Ibom with other revenue sources.
