Nigeria’s First Lady Urges Citizens to Turn Charity Talk Into Action

Oluremi Tinubu wants Nigerians to move charity beyond speeches and into concrete help for people in need. In a message marking International Day of Charity 2026, the first lady said charity “is more than giving; it is about extending a helping hand, restoring hope, and supporting those in need.”

She described kindness, compassion and generosity as forces that can build a more caring and inclusive society. Every act of kindness, she said, can change another person’s life, however small it may be.

Tinubu urged citizens to embrace giving and volunteerism, particularly for less privileged people. “Through our collective action, we can help reduce poverty, strengthen our communities, and ensure that no one is left behind,” she said.

As the world marks International Day of Charity 2026, we are reminded of the power of kindness, compassion, and generosity in building a more caring and inclusive society.

The message came as she continued to promote social-welfare programs, including the zonal rollout of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Nigeria’s South-South. The program targets pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children under six. In Calabar, she also announced cash support for fire victims at Calabar Mall and for women’s groups, linking the charity message to direct material assistance.
