Nigeria's NDLEA destroys 4.6 tonnes of cannabis farms in Edo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State has successfully destroyed nearly 4.6 tonnes of suspected cannabis, seizing it from two plantations and arresting 10 suspects. The state Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, announced the successful operations on Monday in Benin.

In a renewed offensive tasking order, the command discovered and successfully destroyed two suspected cannabis farms measuring 1.851591 hectares with an estimated yield of 4,628.9775kg.

The targeted operations took place in Ugboku, Igbanke Forest within the Orhionmwon Local Government Area, and at drug hotspots in Oluku and Abuja Quarters in Benin City. These actions are part of the command's ongoing commitment to eradicate illicit drug activities within the state, following directives from NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa.

The second farm, measuring 1.151889 hectares, had an estimated yield of 2,879.7225kg and was also destroyed.

Ofoyeju reported that two cannabis farms, covering approximately 1.85 hectares, were discovered and destroyed, yielding an estimated 4,628.9775 kg of the substance. One suspect was apprehended near the first farm, which yielded 1,749.26 kg. The second, larger farm produced 2,879.7225 kg, and two processed bags weighing 12.4 kg were also recovered. Additionally, during a raid in Oluku, a 28-year-old suspect was arrested with suspected cannabis and methamphetamine. Nine other suspects were arrested in Abuja Quarters with various illicit substances, including Loud, cannabis sativa, Swinol, Danabol, Tramadol, Diazepam, and methamphetamine. All suspects are in custody pending prosecution.

At Oluku, Mr Ofoyeju said, a 28-year-old male suspect from Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State was arrested with 25.857kg of suspected cannabis and 93g of methamphetamine.
