Nigeria's New Offensive Against Insecurity: 'Operation Kosaye' Shows Promise

Nigeria is grappling with a profound and escalating security crisis, described as the gravest challenge since the civil war ended in 1970. What began as a religious uprising by Boko Haram in Borno State has transformed into a complex web of insecurity, including insurgency, terrorism, widespread kidnapping, and banditry that affects nearly every geopolitical zone.

Regions previously considered safe havens, such as the Southwest, are now under siege. Highways are plagued by kidnappings, farming communities face attacks, and forest reserves are infiltrated by criminal elements. States like Kwara and Oyo have reported disturbing security breaches, while neighboring Kogi, Benue, and Taraba continue to battle armed criminal gangs.

Operation Kosaye, a coordinated security initiative driven by the NSA and IGP, is commendable.

Amidst this grim landscape, a recent operation offers a ray of hope. Five kidnapped victims were dramatically rescued along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway by the Nigeria Police Force. The victims were abducted by armed kidnappers who opened fire on vehicles, causing collisions before forcing the travelers into the forest, where ransom demands began almost immediately.

In a swift response, the police located the kidnappers' hideout within 24 hours, rescued all five victims alive, and neutralized four of the attackers in a gun battle. This successful operation, dubbed 'Operation Kosaye' (meaning 'No Place for Criminals'), is a joint initiative by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). The operation also led to the arrest of four additional suspected kidnappers and other criminal suspects during follow-up actions, demonstrating a new, coordinated offensive against insecurity.
