According to Truecaller's Global Insights Report, a striking 51% of unknown calls received in Nigeria are flagged as spam or fraud, the highest rate in Africa. This means more than one in every two unknown calls carries a warning, making it unsurvivable for people to ignore caution.

This caution, however, comes at a significant cost for Nigerian professionals. Missing a crucial call from a client, after weeks of trying to connect, can derail business. Conversely, falling victim to a scam, often initiated by a seemingly official bank call, leads to more than just financial loss. The aftermath involves navigating fraud desks, filing police reports, canceling cards, and the exhausting effort to prove unauthorized transactions. The time lost and the lingering anxiety further disrupt work and livelihoods.

The danger extends beyond immediate financial theft. A single compromised call can unlock a cascade of further attacks. Fraudsters may exploit seemingly harmless information to initiate a SIM swap, gain access to banking applications, and then compromise other accounts linked to the same phone number. In Nigeria, a phone number has evolved into a vital gateway to banking, payments, social media, and other digital life aspects. Thus, a successful fraudulent call can become a full-blown attack on an individual's financial and digital identity.
