Nigeria secures seat on global energy platform

Nigeria has formally joined the World Energy Council, marking a significant step to bolster its position in global energy policy discussions. The country has established a new National Member Committee and Governing Board, which are expected to strengthen its influence and provide a platform for tackling domestic energy challenges related to security, affordability, and sustainability.

This development signifies a renewed engagement between Nigeria and the century-old global energy organization. It coincides with Nigeria's intensified efforts to expand electricity access, promote gas development, attract investment, and accelerate industrialization. The newly formed national committee will function as an independent, impartial, and technology-neutral body. It will convene leaders from government, the private sector, finance, academia, and civil society to devise practical solutions for Nigeria's energy issues.

Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council’s global network with a newly constituted National Member Committee and Governing Board, opening a renewed chapter in the country’s longstanding relationship with the Council. World Energy Council Nigeria will provide an independent, impartial and technology-neutral platform bringing together government, industry, finance, academia and civil society to advance practical responses to Nigeria’s Energy Trilemma: energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability.

The World Energy Council Nigeria will concentrate on addressing the "Energy Trilemma," a global challenge involving the balancing of energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability. According to a statement from the World Energy Council Nigeria's media office, the country's participation will enrich Africa's contribution to international energy policy dialogues.

Angela Wilkinson, Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer of the World Energy Council, welcomed Nigeria, stating that the country's involvement will amplify its expertise and voice on the world stage, particularly at the Riyadh World Energy Congress in April 2027. The Governing Board will be chaired by Abdulrazaq Isa, Co-founder and Chairman of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited, with Bala Wunti, former Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Limited, serving as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer. The board comprises individuals with extensive experience across energy policy, operations, regulation, investment, and technology.

Nigeria has a significant leadership role, and the Member Committee will help bring that expertise and voice onto the world stage at the Riyadh World Energy Congress in April 2027 and beyond.
