Nigeria seeks stronger economic, security partnership with Germany

Nigeria is pursuing a deeper partnership with Germany, seeking to bolster cooperation across key sectors including economic development, security, renewable energy, and digital innovation. The call for enhanced collaboration was made by Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during a bilateral meeting with Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul, in Abuja.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu described Germany as one of Nigeria's most significant strategic partners in Europe. She emphasized that the relationship has flourished over decades, built on mutual respect, trust, and productive cooperation. The minister noted that Nigeria-Germany relations extend beyond diplomacy to encompass trade, investment, development cooperation, renewable energy, education, science and technology, migration, culture, peace, and security.

She highlighted the increasing importance of international partnerships in addressing global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, terrorism, climate change, irregular migration, food insecurity, and economic uncertainty.

Nigeria expressed its commitment to expanding cooperation with Germany in emerging fields like renewable energy, digital innovation, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure development, and the green economy. The Nigeria-Germany Bi-national Commission was identified as a crucial platform for advancing this strategic partnership, with the upcoming 2025 session expected to provide a roadmap. The minister also acknowledged Germany's support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), recognizing the country as a reliable partner in promoting regional integration.
