Nigeria targets local production of military hardware, anti-drone systems

Nigeria is accelerating efforts to bolster its indigenous defense sector by planning to locally manufacture armored vehicles, anti-drone systems, and other specialized military equipment. This strategic push is spearheaded by the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria–D7G in collaboration with Eagles International for Defence Systems. The partnership aims to foster significant technology transfer, expand domestic manufacturing capabilities, and decrease the nation's dependence on foreign military hardware.

Osman Chennar, Chief Executive Officer of DICON-D7G, announced that the collaboration is projected to generate over 200 jobs, with an additional approximately 100 employment opportunities for retired military personnel. This initiative follows an inspection tour of Egyptian defense facilities by Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and his delegation. The partnership is expected to enable Nigeria to produce a wider array of military platforms, including the Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle BR6, Armoured Personnel Carrier cabin, and various other armored vehicles and protected platforms.

This development is part of a larger strategy to cultivate a sustainable Nigerian defense manufacturing ecosystem capable of designing, assembling, and producing military equipment domestically. The Nigerian Army has already begun receiving locally manufactured armored vehicles, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance indigenous production and operational readiness. Beyond manufacturing, DICON-D7G also plans to establish a dedicated military jetty in Lagos within the next two to three months. This facility will serve as a crucial logistics hub for the movement of raw materials, components, and finished military equipment, supporting distribution within Nigeria and across the African continent.
