Nigeria, US reinforce strategic defence, security partnership at Washington talks

Nigeria's Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has concluded a series of high-level bilateral engagements in Washington D.C. The meetings focused on deepening military-to-military relations and fortifying counter-terrorism cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

During a strategic meeting at the Pentagon, the Defence Minister was joined by a high-powered Nigerian delegation that included Mr. Taiwo Oyedele the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, General Olufemi Oluyede the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Parker Udiandeye the Chief of Defence Intelligence and other Senior Officers from the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

During a strategic session at the Pentagon, General Musa was accompanied by a significant Nigerian delegation. This group included Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Lt. General Parker Udiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, along with other senior military officers. They held substantive discussions with senior U.S. Department of War officials, led by Julia Sokol, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs.

The engagements served as a direct continuation of the United States–Nigeria Joint Working Group Defence Bilateral Talks. Key areas of focus included shared security architecture, intelligence collaboration, and operational synergies. This diplomatic mission is part of the second meeting of the U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group, which took place from August 12 to 13, 2026.

The Joint Working Group meeting was co-chaired by Nigeria's National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Allison Hooker, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. The discussions reviewed actionable progress and strategic frameworks following Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and a strategic alliance to combat global and regional threats.
