Nigerian Air Force Upgrades Runway, Apron in Rivers State to Boost Air Power

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has significantly enhanced its operational capacity with the unveiling of an upgraded runway and military apron in Rivers State. Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), commissioned the facilities, emphasizing their role in bolstering the NAF's operational capability and mission readiness. This development is seen as a crucial boost to Nigeria's air power and its overall national security architecture.

The improved infrastructure is designed to streamline aircraft deployment, reduce turnaround times, and facilitate more efficient maintenance. These enhancements are particularly vital for supporting ongoing security operations across Nigeria's South-south region, which faces challenges such as terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and piracy. Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, stated that the project reflects the CAS's commitment to strengthening the infrastructure necessary for a responsive and agile NAF.

The new runway and apron will also increase our readiness, increase the number of missions the airport can support, and make our fleet more effective.

Air Marshal Aneke expressed gratitude to Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for his active funding and support, describing it as a commendable example of state-level contribution to national defense. The governor's role in handing over an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter to the NAF was also acknowledged. These investments underscore a strong commitment to enhancing security within Rivers State and supporting broader national security objectives.

Beyond its security functions, the upgraded facilities will also strengthen the NAF's ability to provide rapid humanitarian assistance and emergency response. This includes support for medical evacuations, search-and-rescue missions, disaster relief, and emergency air transport during events like floods and epidemics. The NAF's enhanced capacity reinforces its role not only as a pillar of national defense but also as a critical national asset capable of reaching affected communities swiftly when lives are at risk.
