Nigerian Army Renews Commitment to Defend Nation Amidst Security Challenges

The Nigerian Army has renewed its pledge to defend Nigeria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing its enduring commitment to national service. This reaffirmation came during the Inter-Denominational Church Service marking the Army's 163rd Anniversary Celebration.

This occasion provides us with an opportunity to thank God for His mercies, reflect on our journey, celebrate our accomplishments, honour our heroes and renew our commitment to the defence of our dear nation. It is also a moment to appreciate the sacrifices and dedication of our personnel who continue to serve with courage and professionalism in various operational theatres across the country.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, represented by Major General Maxwell Dangana, Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison, Abuja, highlighted the anniversary as an occasion to express gratitude for divine guidance, honor fallen and active service members, and acknowledge the professionalism of personnel across various operational theaters. "This occasion provides us with an opportunity to thank God for His mercies, reflect on our journey, celebrate our accomplishments, honour our heroes and renew our commitment to the defence of our dear nation," Shaibu stated.

For 163 years, the Nigerian Army has stood as a symbol of patriotism, resilience, and sacrifice. General Shaibu noted its continuous adaptation to emerging security challenges while steadfastly fulfilling its constitutional duty. He stressed that the anniversary serves as a reminder of the Army's mandate, which is intrinsically linked to the safety, prosperity, and confidence of the citizens it is sworn to protect.

In his address, the COAS urged for divine intervention, calling for prayers for Nigeria, its leaders, the armed forces, and all deployed personnel. "Let us pray for divine wisdom, protection, peace, unity and prosperity for Nigeria," he implored, also calling for a renewal of commitment to the Army's core values: loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service, and professionalism.

As we gather in worship today, let us offer prayers for our nation, for our leaders, for members of the Armed Forces and for all those deployed in defence of our country. Let us pray for divine wisdom, protection, peace, unity and prosperity for Nigeria. Let us also renew our commitment to the core values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service and professionalism.

Brigadier General Anthony Maimagani, Director of Chaplain Services (Roman Catholic) of the Nigerian Army, delivered the homily, encouraging troops to emulate Jesus Christ by protecting Nigerians with dedication and compassion. He urged personnel to utilize their training and expertise to safeguard national sovereignty and serve humanity, emphasizing that such service is ultimately service to the nation.
